Purpose and Use Crash Report Coding Guide
In order to collect all of the necessary information relating to a crash, it is necessary to use codes to represent specific information that would otherwise not fit on the report. All police agencies use a series of numerical codes on the left side, right side, and bottom of each crash report to record such information as type crash, type location, weather conditions, and primary cause. Each box number on the crash report corresponds to a list of options on the coding guide. Each option is assigned a number
To identify the meaning of the numerical codes, align your code sheet with the left and right sides of the crash report with the corresponding box number on the coding guide. The number that is placed in the crash report code box represents an option listed on the coding guide.
